History & BackgroundFormed in 1989 from the Chiltern Society’s Small Woodlands Project, became a registered charity in 1991. Our Special Trees and Woods project started in January 2006 and has 40 active volunteers recording the stories behind the trees and woods of the Chilterns. Hosted the EU funded TWIG project(Transnational Woodland Industries Group with partners in Germany and Greece) from April 1999 until 30 June 2002.
Current Aims1. To promote and encourage the sustainable management of woods in the Chiltern Hills a) To protect and enhance the landscape of the Chilterns. b). To maintain and enhance the biodiversity of the Chiltern Hills. 2. To promote a sustainable woodland economy. 3. To promote awareness, understanding and enjoyment of Chiltern woods.

ResourcesCurrently one full time Director and a full time coordinator for our Special Trees and Woods project, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Chilterns Conservation Board Funding: Partnership, currently with funding from Chilterns Conservation Board, Buckinghamshire County Council, Dacorum Borough Council, Three Rivers, Chiltern, Wycombe, South Oxfordshire, Forestry Commission, Chiltern Society plus other earnings and donations. We have also benefited from grants from charitable trusts and the Countryside Agency.

Areas of ActivityWe offer free initial advice to owners of unmanaged woods in Chilterns Natural Area. Charge for services such as preparing woodland grant scheme applications, marking trees for felling etc. Nearly 500 owners visited of approaching 2,000 ha of woodland since 1989. We organise a series of woodland visits, events for the general public and woodland owners and managers, such as "Woods at Work", training days including woodland archaeology, woodland flora and woodland management subject days. We help the Chiltern Society manage Bottom Wood as a nature reserve, help Chiltern DC manage Angling Spring wood. Also on management committee for Common Wood, owned by Penn and Tylers Green Residents Society. Secretary to two Deer Inititative Groups west of M40 in Chilterns

SponsorsHeritage Lottery Fund for Special Trees and Woods. Chilterns Conservation Board and list of funding partners above. The Countryside Agency have been an important sponsor in the past and also the EU RECITE funded TWIG project which ended in June 2002.
